Job description
We are looking for a PhD student who will be part of the research theme focused on entrepreneurship-as-practice (EaP), in which we study the the practices of entrepreneuring as they unfold and are experienced in real-time.
Entrepreneurship scholars have recently taken the practice 'turn' happening across the social sciences by forefronts the notion that practices and their connections as fundamental to the ontology of all entrepreneurial phenomena. Entrepreneurs, ventures, or startups, in this view, are not ontologically separate phenomena from the performance of everyday, materially accomplished and ordered practices. The term 'practice', therefore, does not refer to an 'empty' conceptual category of 'what entrepreneurs think and do', but encompasses the meaning-making, identity-forming and order-producing actions enacted by multiple entrepreneurial practitioners and situated in specific cultural-historical conditions. Yet, research into the practices of entrepreneurship remains in its infancy, with many relevant entrepreneurship practices remaining unexamined, unanswered questions related to their operation and consequences, and taken-for-granted notions in scholarship.
In light of this opportunity, we are looking for a PhD candidate who will be excited to work with us to further understand the practices of entrepreneurship. In particular, we interested in research topics such as opportunity development and assessment, risk management, storytelling, teamwork dynamics, imagining and adapting visions of the future, problem solving, resource acquisitioning and leveraging, and building and using networks. We aim to contribute to the emerging field of research on that takes a practice-theory perspective, deepening insights into practices and their relations, but also cover new territory in studying 'settled' entrepreneurship topics, such as opportunity development and assessment or teamwork dynamics. Moreover, we aim to contribute to the contextualization of entrepreneurship studies by examining how and why various entrepreneurship practices are situated in cultural and historical contexts, using comparative ethnographic techniques.
Empirically, these projects will leverage ethnographic data, specifically (reflexive) video ethnography, to understand the accomplishment of various entrepreneurship practices, how they relate to each other, and with what consequences for societal issues (e.g., diversity, equality, sustainability). We will use multi-sited audio-visual observations to establish these relations and consequences. Therefore, we are looking for a doctoral student who is comfortable working with ethnography and video-based qualitative analysis, and who is also closely familiar with ethnomethology/conversation analysis, as well as entrepreneurship theories, frameworks and concepts.
