PhD Position Design of Flatfish Behaviour Stimulation Technology

Beam trawling to catch flatfish species like sole and plaice results in high bycatch rates, high fuel consumption due to contact drag and severe damage to seafloor sediment. As a PhD candidate at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) you will research acoustic, hydraulic and mechanical stimuli and design StimTech devices to minimise energy consumption and seabed impact, while increasing catch volumes and selectivity. Your research will be part of the joint approach of the Netherlands Science Foundation NWO, Wageningen University, Wageningen Marine Research and TU Delft. Will you help us future-proof the fishing sector?

You will start by carrying out an evaluation of the current initiatives, for which you’ll be speaking with our fishery partners. And you will work closely with a PhD student at Wageningen University, who focuses on the fish biomechanics and behaviour in response to the various stimuli. Having designed an initial setup and conducted lab experiments and numerical simulations, you will jointly carry out small-scale tests involving live fish. In the second phase of your project, you will collaborate with a Wageningen Postdoc candidate, who will integrate your design into a demersal fishing gear concept that will be field-tested at sea. Occasionally, you will also supervise Master students working on related research.

At TU Delft, the interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technicians at the Department of Maritime & Transport Technology will be your homebase, where you’ll be joining the ten-strong Dredging research team. You also have:

  • An MSc in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, offshore engineering or another MSc involving hydromechanics and/or geotechnics;
  • Good numerical modelling, data analysis and experimental design skills;
  • An excellent command of English, as you’ll be working in an internationally diverse community.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year.
