PhD Position Design and Analysis of Novel Converter Interface for the Hydrogen Electrolysis

The Delft University of Technology is hiring a doctoral candidate for the development of novel high-power converters for green hydrogen production.

Multilevel power converters emerge as a promising solution for electrolyzer applications, offering enhanced power quality and efficiency. However, existing multilevel topologies primarily serve as high-power motor drives operating in inverter mode (DC to AC), highlighting the need for novel converter topologies optimized for rectifier mode (AC to DC) operation at low switching frequencies to meet the specific requirements of hydrogen production. The primary objective of this research is to develop advanced multilevel power converter topologies optimized for rectifier mode operation in hydrogen production via water electrolysis. The research aims to address the shortcomings of existing converter technologies by increasing power density, enhancing power quality, reducing voltage ripples, and improving overall system efficiency. Additionally, the research seeks to design associated controllers and switching techniques tailored to the dynamic characteristics of the grid, ensuring seamless integration and compatibility.

This is a four-year doctoral position. You will be jointly supervised by Dr. Hani Vahedi (assistant professor) and Prof. Pavol Bauer (chair of the DCE&S group).

 About the department

The research in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy is inspired by the technical, scientific, and societal challenges originating from the transition towards a more sustainable society and focuses on four areas:

The DC Systems, Energy Conversion, and Storage (DCE&S) group is responsible for research and education in the fields of DC systems, high voltage technology, energy storage, power electronics conversion, and electromechanics. DC systems is a multidisciplinary field of research exploring the integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage (electric vehicles) in DC networks and systems. The department has a large ESP lab with state-of-the-art equipment to facilitate the designing and testing of innovative ideas in the field.

To be considered for this PhD position you should have:

  • A Master’s degree in Electric Engineering.
  • Knowledge and interest in power electronic converters and DC power systems.
  • Experience in hardware design and implementation.
  • Skills in real-time simulations with Opal-RT or Plecs devices is an asset.
  • Appreciation of teamwork, good social skills, and the ability to function in international circles.
  • A curiosity-driven mindset, the ability to learn new things and a passion for (doing) research.
  • Good English language and communication skills (written and oral) in order to closely cooperate with colleagues and students as well as write project documents.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2770 per month in the first year to € 3539 in the fourth year.
