PhD Position Conversational AI for Social Good
Published Deadline Location
today 27 Dec Delft

Do you believe conversational AI would be better to help and even collaborate with people if they responded to people's emotions? If it remembered what is important to you and supported you in your decision making?
Job description

Adapting and responding to each other’s emotions and adhering to a set of norms. These capabilities are what enables humans to form a picture of a person and makes us create relationships.

Yet, conversational AI still needs this ability. This PhD position is dedicated to addressing this gap by developing the underlying data-driven models that enable a robot to engage with humans in a socially aware manner.

While there are many application domains to which such technology could apply, the ideal candidate would have an interest in applications for social good. The PhD candidate will work on techniques to leverage a person's language and non-verbal signals and further develop machine learning techniques. The ideal candidate will have some initial experience in language technology and a keen interest in engaging with reinforcement learning.

Department
Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
