PhD Position Characterization of the Origin of Vibration Nuisance at Train-Track Discontinuities

Within the research program STEM – “ SpoorTrillingen Emissie Model (Track vibration emission model)” – ProRail, TNO, Deltares and TU Delft will work together to investigate the origin and propagation of vibrations in typical Dutch railways, and to develop a calculation tool embedding the accumulated knowledge with which track vibrations and effects of mitigation measures can be calculated. TU Delft is recruiting 4 PhD students to work in this research program. One PhD position is available to work on characterizing the origin of train-induced vibration nuisance, especially at discontinuities.

Background:

Train-track interaction, especially at discontinuities (insulated joints, compensation joints, switches and crossings, level crossings, rail and wheel defects), is the origin of train-induced vibration nuisance. This nuisance primarily takes place at certain locations, but not at others. It is necessary to understand why the nuisance occurs at these locations, and then develop a tool and countermeasures to predict, remedy, remove and prevent the nuisance through maintenance and design.

Project description

The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the other PhD projects and with the STEM partners. The PhD student aims at (a) developing numerical models to describe the train-track interaction at discontinuities, to identify and characterize the origin of the vibration nuisance, as well as characterize and quantify the vibration that is transmitted into the ballast; (b) developing simplified and fast methods that can be used to define and characterize a train and track, with or without discontinuities, in the STEM calculation tool; (c) proposing methods for long-term monitoring of contact and track geometry, track stiffness and train load; (d) providing insight, methods, guidelines for predicting vibration nuisance, and for improving the related track design and maintenance.

We are looking for a candidate with an MSc degree in Mechanical, Civil, Geotechnical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field. Knowledge of dynamics and vibration and experience in finite element modelling are required. Experience with measurement and signal processing will be a plus. The applicants should have a high level of proficiency in written and spoken English, and very good communication skills. The successful candidate is expected to cooperate with other members of the research team and external partners.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School.
