The Cardiovascular & Respiratory Physiology (CRPH) group offers a PhD position where you will play a central role in working closely together with partners from clinical healthcare and biomedical industry. Together with and for patients, we will work towards a clinically suitable, synchronized multiple-parameter acquisition system including the development of automated signal analysis of large quantities of patient data acquired in a domestic setting.
As PhD student on this project, you will be a leading figure to manage the prospective clinical trial in COPD patients assisted with home mechanical ventilation. Your role in this project will qualify you as a medical translational expert in respiratory physiology and mechanical ventilatory support.
The project is financed by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) in the domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (TTW) and is entitled ‘Improving chronic nocturnal noninvasive ventilation in COPD patients: a multimodality approach’ (NOCTIVENT).
You will be appointed as member of the CRPH group, which is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW) and embedded in the Translational Physiology cluster of the TechMed Centre. Together with our clinical partners we strive to develop innovative, practical solutions for daily care working together with the biomedical industry. This specific project is performed in close collaboration with the Center for Home Mechanical Ventilation of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

    About the department

The Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology group is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW) and embedded in the Translational Physiology cluster of the TechMed Centre. Together with our clinical partners we strive to develop innovative, practical solutions for daily care working together with the biomedical industry. The goals of the CRPH group are to increase system-based understanding of cardiorespiratory physiology, and thereby improve quality of medical education and patient care, by developing improved diagnostics and guiding of therapy. Means include biomedical signal processing and modelling of the cardiovascular and respiratory system.

    About the organization

The Faculty of Science & Technology (Technische Natuurwetenschappen, TNW) engages some 700 staff members and 2000 students in education and research on the cutting edge of chemical technology, applied physics and biomedical technology. Our fields of application include sustainable energy, process technology and materials science, nanotechnology and technical medicine. As part of a people-first tech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally and is strengthened by the many young researchers working on innovative projects with as doctoral candidates and post-docs. It has been accommodated in three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre and Digital Society Institute.
