PhD or Postdoc position on numerical modeling of the atmospheric impacts of aviation emissions

Aviation emissions adversely impact the environment, contributing both to air pollution and climate effects. The projected growth in aviation emissions and projected decline in emissions from other energy and transportation sectors, result in aviation emissions' impacts being increasingly important in both absolute terms and relative to other sectors.

State-of-the-art atmospheric models that simulate the chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere are employed to assess the resulting atmospheric effects of emissions, as well as to understand the underlying processes and how they may evolve in the future. However, the models are computationally expensive, restricting their application in engineering and regulatory decision-making for sustainable aviation. This PhD or Postdoc position aims to develop and/or apply novel numerical methods for creating simplified (rapid) models from computationally expensive simulations. Outcomes of this research are aimed to help guide technological and regulatory decisions for minimising the associated environmental impact of future aircraft and operations.

- The candidate should have a Master's degree in an area relevant to the subject, e.g. aerospace engineering, atmospheric science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, (applied) physics, or other related area.

- For the Postdoc position, the candidate should hold a PhD in an area relevant to the subject.

- A combination of good analytical skills and advanced programming skills with a strong interest in interdisciplinary work is advantageous for this position.

TU Delft offers PhD-candidates a 4-year contract, with an official go/no go progress assessment after one year. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2395 per month in the first year to € 3061 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. This PhD or Postdoc position will be hosted in the Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects Section of the Department of Control and Operations of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. The mission of the Department of Control and Operations is to improve the safety and efficiency of operations in aerospace and to reduce the impact on the environment. The department comprises three sections: Control and Simulation, which focuses on the development of advanced automatic control systems (including the role of the human operator), Air Transport Operations, which aims to improve operational performance in terms of capacity, safety and economy, and Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects, which focuses on reducing aircraft noise, emissions and the effects of aviation on climate change and air quality.
