Challenge: Develop an open-source aviation climate impact model.
Change: Integrating the non-CO2 climate impact, e.g., from contrails impact.
Impact: Accelerating the development of ultra-efficient, low-emission aircraft technology.

Job description

As the aviation sector continues to grow, its contribution to climate change calls for impactful measures. Besides CO2 and NOx emissions, the formation of warming contrails is a principal contributor to climate change. Depending on your seniority, you will conduct research into the climate impact of disruptive aircraft engine technology as a PhD or Postdoc candidate working on the European MINIMAL project.

You will further develop the open source climate response model for evaluating aircraft engine technology. Based on the output of the Earth Model System, you’ll adapt the model to integrate the impact of contrails. As a next step, you will analyse the simulated atmospheric response, the feedback of which will be incorporated in engine design. Yours being interdisciplinary research, you’ll regularly discuss and align your work with the European project partners, which include aerospace faculties, aviation research institutes and engine manufacturers. In addition, you’ll work closely with our German partner DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) on integration with their open access framework.

Coaching bachelor and master students and supervising their projects is also part of your role. As a PhD candidate you yourself will receive all the training you need to evolve. While in the Postdoc position you will be preparing for your academic career and take on a more leading role in education, project coordination and developing project proposals. The Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects group will be your homebase. You’ll be joining our highly motivated, friendly and supportive team of three Professors, three assistant Professors, two Postdocs and more than twenty PhD students. Ours is an open-minded, inspiring and friendly atmosphere, in which you’ll be sharing ideas and knowledge. It’s our mission to reduce the environmental impact of aviation, while improving safety and efficiency.
