PhD on Strategies and Policies to Create Circular Hospitals (0.8 - 1.0 FTE)

Functie
Hospitals are tasked with making people healthier, but unfortunately this has come at a price for environmental sustainability. Their unsustainable way of operating results in excessive use of raw materials, generation of waste, water pollution, and adds to greenhouse gas emissions.
The Netherlands aims to have a fully circular economy by 2050 – a waste-free economy that runs as much as possible on sustainable and renewable raw materials, and in which products and raw materials are reused. With this PhD project, you will contribute to the transition towards circular hospitals and lowering the ecological footprint of healthcare.
The Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University is offering a fully-funded four-year PhD position on strategies and policies for circular hospitals. We seek a motivated PhD candidate with a strong interest in circular economy and the healthcare sector.
In this PhD project, you will:
  • analyse existing linear practices in hospitals and alternative circular strategies (e.g. moving from single-use medical consumables to reusables);
  • identify systemic blocking factors and what supports the development, implementation and diffusion of circular strategies in hospitals using a mission-oriented innovation systems approach;
  • co-design an evidence-based roadmap for the successful implementation and upscaling of circular strategies in hospitals.
To conduct the research you will collaborate intensively with the Utrecht University Medical Center, TU Delft, RIVM and GUPTA Strategists.

This project is part of the ESCH-R consortium. The ESCH-R consortium consists of the academic hospitals  UMCU and Erasmus MC, together with academic and societal partners.
