Quantum Delta Eindhoven hub
Quantum Delta NL is public-private foundation, launched in 2020 with the mandate to coordinate and execute the Netherland’s National Agenda for Quantum Technology (NAQT). Recently Quantum Delta NL has been awarded, in the context of the National Growth Fund, €615 million from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy to power the advancement of quantum technology.

TU/e hosts one of the five Quantum Delta NL major quantum hubs, collaborating on innovation by bringing together top-quality scientists, engineers, students, and entrepreneurs, working together on the frontier of quantum technology.

One of the priorities in the Eindhoven Quantum hub is the implementation of quantum-enabling technologies and test-bed for its validation, test and certification. Its mission is to perform fundamental and applied research to push the boundaries of quantum devices, materials and technology development and to develop novel methods, applications and use cases to the benefit of society.

Furthermore, the Eindhoven Quantum hub, works in cooperation with partners, on assuring the broad participation of society in the development of data security solutions that will be trusted by all relevant stakeholders and society in general. In this context, the recent awarded project Fieldlab Quantum Cryptography Solutions for Safe Society – FIQCS, is an interdisciplinary consortium that aims to co-create a roadmap and co-design a fieldlab with societal stakeholders, in which knowledge, methods, and technology will be developed to evaluate and eventually work towards standards and certification methods for these new advanced quantum cryptographic systems.

Job description

We are seeking for candidates for a PhD research position at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The candidate is expected to contribute to the develop further the regional testbed, create the Eindhoven fieldlab, establish new optical attack vector techniques for characterizing the security of QKD optical components in their interface to other QKD component systems, hardware and development of interfaces to upcoming use-cases and establishing security profile/ certification evaluation techniques. Moreover, the activities in the FIQC project are aligned with the use-case developments in the CAT-2 project of the National Growth Fund QuantumDelta project. Therefore, PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with the CAT-2 working group on use cases development and test-bed deployment.

The candidate will work in a team composed of professors, postdoc researchers, assistant/associate professors, engineers, PhDs, and students. The candidate will interact with experts on innovation, eco-system development, quantum cryptography, QKD systems and with the team establishing the testbed for quantum secure communications and networking. The candidate will be assigned to the Electro-Optical Communication (ECO) group of the Department of Electrical Engineering.


Job requirements
  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or Telecommunications related area with strong cybersecurity background.
  • A research-oriented attitude, with a passion for application-driven scientific problems and impactful solutions.
  • Experience with quantum or classical cryptography is strongly desired.
  • Ability to work in a team and interested in collaborating with the industrial partners.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Conditions of employment

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.

  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
