Creativity forms the basis for the design of all human artefacts. This Creative AI Machines project aims to research creativity and develop creative AI methods to (a) generate creative design solutions, and (b) emerge and promote creativity in (human) design processes through close interaction between AI and humans.
Most current "creative" AI simply provides designers with a vast array of ideas. This project develops methods for creative AI interpretation and by using new technologies with respect to neural and Bayesian networks, the "inner world" of AI systems is revealed to the user and can be engaged with. Furthermore you will explore working with design process simulations, and small scale co-bots and fabrication machines engaging in collaborative creative tasks.
As a PhD researcher from the human technology Interaction group, you will focus on developing new methods for creative interaction and researching how people engage with AI due to these methods. You will strongly collaborate with an Industrial Design PhD researcher on the Creative-AI project, who will focus on researching the design process and the interaction process between AI and humans in a more physical, embodied setting. Your job will be to reflect and capitalize on findings from ongoing studies at the TU/e and HTI on the application of Neural Networks and Bayesian Networks for creative processes. You will develop the methodology for ‘Creative AI’ and investigate the interaction between humans and the AI machine. As a result you will contribute to innovative human-technology interaction in our society. You will publish your findings in top-tier academic journals preferably with a multi-disciplinary audience and proactively disseminate the methodology that you will develop through education, conferences, and workshops.
The research will be done in a multi-disciplinary approach across the departments of Build Environment (BE), Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS), and Industrial Design (ID). You will become part of the EAISI institute (Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Institute) to join forces in creating AI for the real world. You will receive day-to-day supervision from Sanne Schoenmakers (HTI, IE&IS). And you will work in a team with Kristina Andersen (ID), Herm Hofmeyer (BE), Pieter Pauwels (BE) and Wijnand IJsselsteijn (HTI, IE&IS).
The Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI) was established in the summer of 2019 as a cross-departmental institute that brings together all AI activities of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). EAISI stimulates, supports, and organizes collaboration between TU/e AI researchers and companies and societal partners. EAISI’s goal is to stimulate multidisciplinary AI research on the combination of three of TU/e’s traditionally strong research domains of Data Science, Humans and Ethics, and Engineering Systems. EAISI aims to develop AI technology for autonomous decision-making in engineering systems that interact with and support humans. - A MSc degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, software engineering, creative coding, cognitive neuroscience or a related field, as well as a fascination for machine learning and the human brain.

- You don’t have to fit the requirements exactly, most important is your interest in this research topic and your approach to science. Do you like to immerse yourself in a challenging programming task?Do you like studying human behavior and interaction with technology? Do you like to puzzle with complex ideas and implement them in code? Do you like to brainstorm with a project team and together test new ideas? If so, then this project might be great for you.
Conditions of employment
- A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university with the possibility to present your work at international conferences.
- A full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months.
- To develop your teaching skills, you will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
- To support you during your PhD and to prepare you for the rest of your career, you will make a Training and Supervision plan and you will have free access to a personal development program for PhD students (PROOF program ).
- The gross starting salary amounts to €2,395 per month based on a 38-hour working week, and will increase to €3,061 from the fourth year onwards (salary scale P).
- In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
- The starting date would ideally be October 1st, 2021, but is somewhat flexible.
- Benefits (such as a pension scheme, pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
- Should you come from abroad and comply with certain conditions, you can make use of the so-called '30% facility', which permits you not to pay tax on 30% of your salary.
- A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, and savings schemes.
- Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as an international spouse program, and excellent on-campus children day care and sports facilities.
