Offer Description
The theory and security groups at VU Amsterdam welcome applications for a fully-funded, 4-year PhD supervised by Kristina Sojakova and Klaus von Gleissenthall . The PhD research will focus on developing effective and scalable tools against side-channel attacks, with a focus on hardware. This position is partially funded through an ERC starting grant.
Your PhD research will focus on developing effective tools to guard against side-channel attacks. In hardware, an attacker can measure certain physical quantities such as the time elapsed or the power consumed during a computation to recover a surprising amount of secrets. Such attacks are easy to implement, difficult to detect, and powerful against strong encryption mechanisms. What's worse, they have become much more dangerous with the discovery of microarchitectural attacks like Spectre, Meltdown, and Hertzbleed, which allow attackers to break through traditional isolation barriers using details of the processor's microarchitecture.
As part of the PhD research, we will combine insights from cryptoanalysis with techniques from programming languages and type systems to build secure hardware that withstands sophisticated attacks. The goal is to build new open-source secure hardware and publish papers at top conferences in security, programming languages, and computer architecture.
