Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 21 Oct 2022

The structure and use of digital building logbooks to support energy efficient and sustainable buildings.

We are hiring a doctoral candidate on the structure and use of digital building logbooks (DBLs) that support energy efficient and sustainable buildings. The development of DBLs is supported by many European policies. There are several existing DBLs with different functionalities, different data structures, different ownership models and different users. The PhD will be part of the Horizon Europe project DEMO-BLog in which 5 DBL's in different countries will be demonstrated and evaluated. This will lead to insights and recommendations for the further development of these DBLs and new DBLs in other countries. The PhD candidate will carry out evaluations of various aspects of the DBLs ranging from the content and structure, to the foundations, use and impact of the DBLs.

We are looking for a person with a relevant Master degree and an interest in building data and the use of it in various processes and by various stakeholders.

Demo-BLog brings together: (i) 5 different DBLs with a total of 4.5 million registered units and a wide variety of target groups (homeowners, municipalities, building professionals and architects) offering scale and diversity; (ii) 4 diverse functionalities addressing key societal challenges, ranging from ‘quick wins’ (renovation and advice and (community driven) decarbonisation pathways) to complex industrial transaction objectives (circularity); (iii) partners, frontrunners in R&D, policymaking and market implementation in highly visible platforms over the last 5 years and (iv) substantial opportunities to build and leverage parallel projects and activities focused on evolving/scaling the participating DBLs.

We are looking for an excellent candidate with the following qualifications, knowledge and skills:

  • A Master's degree in a discipline such as Building Technology, Construction Management, Architecture, Industrial Design, or other related technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of energy-efficient buildings, circular construction, transition processes in the building stock.
  • Knowledge of policies, regulations and building processes and the position of stakeholders in the processes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English proven by a minimum score of 100 in TOEFL or IELTS of 7.0 per sub-skill (writing, reading, listening, speaking). Native speakers will be exempt from the English test requirement, as well as, in principle, non-native applicants who have obtained an English-taught Master’s degree. For more information, see https://www.tudelft.nl/onderwijs/opleidingen/phd/admission .
  • The ability to work in a team, take initiative, be result-oriented, organized and creative.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Academic attitude in performing research. You are independent, self-motivated and eager to learn.
  • Willingness to work with partners to link real-world challenges to multidisciplinary research questions.
  • The possibility to start employment in January 2023.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis.
