Offer Description
One PhD position is available in the group of Alexander Belyy at the University of Groningen in the field of structural biochemistry of bacterial virulence factors.
Infectious diseases are a leading cause of death worldwide. Using cutting-edge structural biology techniques, we aim to unravel the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, laying the groundwork for novel therapeutic approaches.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team focused on elucidating the complex interactions between bacterial virulence factors and their host targets. Through the application of modern biochemical and molecular biological methods, as well as advanced techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy, the PhD student will investigate the structure-function relationships of key bacterial proteins involved in infection processes.

Specific Requirements
The successful applicant has:
- a Master’s degree in biochemistry, structural biology, molecular biology, chemistry or related disciplines. Prospective graduates are equally encouraged to apply.
- a good command of English (oral and written)
- high motivation to do cool science!
Experience in cryo-EM, protein translation or actin biochemistry will be an advantage.
Additional Information
Benefits
We offer you, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary of € 2,770 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,539 gross per month in the fourth and final year
- a full-time position (1.0 FTE). The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years is to be expected
- a PhD training programme is part of the agreement and the successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering
- a holiday allowance of 8% of gross annual income
- an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
- minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment
The preferred starting date is summer 2024.
