Job description

The Department of Educational Research and Development (ERD) at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University offers a 4-year PhD position for a student with a (Research) Master of Science degree or equivalent, starting in September 2023. 

At SBE, we offer a dynamic and challenging job in an internationally oriented organisation where students receive advanced education and scholars conduct exciting research. The PhD Candidate will have the opportunity to carry out research within the ERD department, in the context of the topic described below, and within the PhD programme of the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE). As such, the PhD student will contribute to the development and outreach of our research. Working at SBE enables the candidate to be part of an (inter)national network of top universities and renowned scholars.

The selected PhD Candidate will work on a project aimed at studying ‘Professional skill development in higher education’. One of the main aims of higher education is to prepare students for a dynamic and constantly evolving labour market. To this end, students need lifelong professional skills such as leadership, teamwork, and reflective skills. The primary goal of this PhD project is to advance knowledge on characteristics of effective professional skill development of students in higher education. This PhD project will focus primarily on the scholarly fields of Educational Research, Educational Psychology, and Counselling. Yet, it also seeks to integrate knowledge from the field of Learning and Development as well as Business and Organizational Psychology to produce a more novel, rounded, and in-depth investigation into this phenomenon. Another unique aspect of this PhD project is that it involves a collaboration between different faculties across Maastricht University in which you will work closely together with colleagues at SBE and the faculty of Law.

Requirements

You hold a 1-year master’s degree or a 2-year research master’s degree. You have a strong affinity for research, have developed research skills over the course of your studies and are willing to develop them further over the course of your PhD. You are fluent in both spoken and written English and share our ambition to conduct high-quality research with scientific and practical/societal impact. You have a background in the field of (organizational, social, or experimental) psychology, educational sciences, learning and development, (human resource) management or other related fields.


Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

The full-time position is offered for four years. The first year will be a probation period, after a positive assessment the position will be extended for another 3 years.

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for PhD-candidate.
Your salary will be € 2,541 gross per month in the first year up to € 3,247 gross per month in the fourth year. An 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance is also provided.

This PhD position involves a division of research tasks (80%) and teaching/educational tasks (20%), for example serving as a tutor, supervisor, coach or course (co-)coordinator at SBE and/or the faculty of Law. In these tasks, you will be supervised by a multidisciplinary team based at SBE and the faculty of Law.

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing. Other secondary conditions include a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave.
