Job description
We are looking for a PhD candidate to join the NMReChem group at the Magnetic Resonance Research Center, Institute for Molecules and Materials, Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands. This PhD candidate position is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and will be supervised by Dr Evan Wenbo Zhao (assistant professor) with a focus on developing and applying operando NMR methods for studying electrocatalysis.
The PhD project has two major components - NMR method development and electrocatalysis, with an emphasis on NMR method including novel probe implementation and application. The overarching goal of this PhD project is to help reduce CO2 emission through green electrochemical synthesis of commodity chemicals such as ammonia. We contribute to this goal by using the new NMR approach to push the fundamental understanding of reaction mechanisms.

Employer
The NMReChem group , led by Dr Evan Wenbo Zhao, focuses on the development and application of operando nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods for studying electrochemistry with a focus on grid-scale energy storage and chemical conversion, which has overarching implications for mitigating climate change. The group is part of the Magnetic Resonance Research Center (MRRC), which nurtures a strong collaborative environment. The group collaborates with other academic and industrial labs from the Netherlands, Iceland, Spain, Germany, UK, US and Canada. We have routine access to a suite of solid-state and solution NMR systems (ten in total) and develop and home-build customised NMR probes, supported by a team of knowledgeable engineers.
The Center is embedded within the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM). As one of the major research institutes of the Faculty of Science at Radboud University, IMM is a research institute in chemistry and physics that fosters interdisciplinary research. Its mission is to design and create functional molecules and materials with the intention of fundamentally understanding their behaviour.
