Job description

Maastricht University has a vacancy for a PhD student at the faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences in Clinical Data Science. In this position, you will perform all aspects of clinical data science research in a pan-European collaborative network consisting of 14 partners aiming to improve the care of adolescents and young adults with cancer. The selected candidate will be in charge of data harmonization that makes diverse data from routine care, national cancer registries and patient portals adhere to FAIR data principles. In addition, the selected candidate will be collaborate with research partners and project stakeholders to apply statistical and machine learning methods to answer clinical and operational questions. The selected candidate joins an interdisciplinary team comprising computer scientists, medical physicists, clinicians, informaticians, software engineers, post-doctoral researchers and other PhD students.

Requirements

We are looking for a committed and ambitious PhD-student with at least an MSc-degree in data science, medical informatics, computer science, medical physics or equivalent scientific discipline. A strong background in programming, data processing and statistical machine learning is needed.

You are an open-minded, self-motivated, independent, responsible and results-oriented researcher who shows initiative, and takes pride in high quality of work. We are looking for someone with a special interest in healthcare research and who is motivated to build a scientific career in healthcare. You are expected to closely collaborate with other members of the Clinical Data Science group and communicate your work widely.

Willingness to travel for research work and teaching/mentoring experience will be viewed favourably. For this position, you need to relocate to the Maastricht-region of The Netherlands. Knowledge of the Dutch language is not a requirement, but you must be fluent in English (minimum of IELTS 7 or equivalent). You must have demonstrable communication skills for academic publications and oral presentations.


Conditions of employment

Temporary employment for 4 years. The first year will be a probation period, after a positive assessment the position will be extended for another 3 years, which happens in the vast majority of cases.

Your salary will be € 2,541 gross per month in the first year up to € 3,247 gross per month in the fourth year according to the PhD-candidate salary scale. An 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance is also provided.

The Clinical Data Science group performs data science research with the aim to improve health. The research group has three research themes: 1) build global data sharing infrastructures, 2) develop Artificial Intelligence based applications and outcome prediction models from these data and 3) apply AI to improve health.
The group is embedded within a clinical environment (Maastricht UMC+ and Maastro Clinic).
