Job description
Are you interested in freshwater biodiversity and would you like to improve our understanding of global patterns in freshwater fish diversity? Then join our environmental science group for a 4-year PhD position focused on understanding and predicting global distributions of freshwater fish species. You will be part of a larger team studying broad-scale biodiversity patterns with the ultimate aim of identifying solutions for a more sustainable and nature-inclusive society.
Understanding the large-scale distributions of species and the underlying drivers is key towards identifying effective measures for biodiversity conservation. In this project, you will be quantifying and analysing the global distributions of freshwater fish species. You will be developing species distribution models by relating geo-referenced observations of species to a set of key abiotic drivers related to water quantity and quality. You will validate the models using data on species traits (e.g. their physiological tolerance to certain water quality parameters) and time-series of species observations. There will be close connections with a parallel PhD project focused on analysing broad-scale patterns in the morphological, physiological and ecological traits of freshwater fish species. Both PhD projects are in turn part of a larger project aimed at better understanding human impacts on freshwater fish diversity. Your teaching load may be up to 10% of your working time.
