Offer Description

Total knee arthroplasty is an intervention to treat osteoarthritis. During surgery the damaged cartilage surfaces of the femur and tibia are replaced by implants that together form the new articulating surface of the knee joint. The procedure is quite popular (+20.000 surgeries every year in the Netherlands), has an impressive survival rate, and provides immediate pain relief for patients. We are looking for a motivated and talented PhD candidate to participate in a new project that investigates the primary fixation of PEEK cementless total knee arthroplasty components.

Within this project you will collaborate with Invibio Ltd, an orthopaedic company that develops novel orthopaedic implants. Together with Invibio, we are investigating the use of the advanced material polyether ether ketone (PEEK) for total knee arthroplasty. PEEK is a high-quality material that is already being used in several orthopaedic applications, such as fracture plates and spinal cages. A notable difference with other materials currently being used is it significantly lower stiffness.

Within the project you will investigate how this influences the primary and long-term fixation of the implant. For this purpose, you use computational modelling based on finite element analysis. You will develop and apply advanced simulations to simulate the osseointegration process of cementless implants. You will use population-based analyses to investigate the effects of variability in factors related to the patient, surgery, and implant, and define the optimal parameters for total knee reconstructions.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Develop and perform scientific research in the field of orthopaedics, biomechanics, and image processing.
  • Generate and analyze data, write scientific publications, and present findings at scientific meetings.
  • Participate in educational activities of the department.
  • Work in an international and multidisciplinary team of scientists to discuss, plans and perform research in a stimulating environment.
  • Complete the research project with a scientific dissertation.
