Mobility hubs (MHs) are expected to support the transition towards a sustainable mobility system. Would you like to improve the knowledge surrounding the potential of MHs? Then you have a part to play as a PhD candidate. Develop your skills as an aspiring researcher and learn new things by working with real-world cases within this exciting research project.

This PhD research aims at improving the knowledge of the potential contribution of MH policies towards a sustainable mobility system. This improved knowledge will provide input for developing a participatory and adaptive approach supporting MH multi-stakeholder decision-making under uncertainty across different geographical scales (local, urban, and regional). The approach aims (1) to develop a conceptual MH framework on decision-making and apply it to cases at different scales (using group model building and shared visioning) to specify problems, goals and MH options, (2) to explore the uncertainty of implementing MH options (applying assumption-based planning) across these scales, and (3) to identify the trade-offs and, given their vulnerabilities and robustness, assess different MH policy options against uncertainties from the previous step to come to integrated transition pathways across scales (using serious gaming). The project will require collaboration on real-world cases with people from practice (e.g. policymakers, service providers and users) Hence, you will be expected to work with practitioners in the field in carrying out your research. You will present your research at international conferences and publish your results in scientific journals. The research should result in a PhD thesis. In addition to research, you will also have some teaching duties (e.g. giving tutorials and/or supervising BSc theses). 

Profile

• You should hold a Master's degree in either (a) policy analysis, systems analysis, technology assessment/foresight, or systems engineering or (b) transport, urban and regional studies, spatial planning, civil engineering, or a related field. 
• You have a strong interest in complex problem-solving, decision-making under uncertainty, and adaptive planning.
• You have demonstrable strong analytical and methodological skills, and the ability to conduct participatory and action-oriented research. 
• You have knowledge of, and preferably research experience with, model building, serious gaming and scenario building.
• You have an excellent command of written and spoken English and preferably also of Dutch.
• You have the ability to work independently and in a team (i.e. a willingness to interact intensively with your academic colleagues and societal partners).
• Preferably, you have demonstrable experience/skills related to working with people in the field of societal / transport planning.

At the Nijmegen School of Management, academic research and teaching are carried out in challenging educational programmes. These programmes are offered in the areas of Business Administration; Economics and Business Economics; Geography, Planning and Environment; Political Science; and Public Administration. Academic research takes place within the Institute for Management Research  (IMR). Research is carried out within the above-mentioned domains and in interdisciplinary research groups: the Hotspots. The Nijmegen School of Management currently has 400 FTE staff and around 5,000 students.
The intended thesis supervisors are Prof. V Marchau and Dr S. Lenferink. The project is embedded within IMR in the context of other mobility studies (On the Move (link is external) , Triple Access Planning for Uncertain Futures (link is external) ). You will become a member of the TRAIL Research Schoo (link is external) l, where will be expected to attend relevant courses and activities.

We offer

• It concerns an employment for 1.0 FTE.
• The gross starting salary amounts to €2,541 per month based on a 38-hour working week, and will increase to €3,247 in the fourth year (salary scale P ).
• You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
• It concerns a temporary employment for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years (4 year contract).
• You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services . Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
• Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.
