Job description
Do you have an interdisciplinary research profile and proven experience with qualitative research methods? We are offering a position as a PhD researcher, devoted to improving the rights and conditions of irregularized migrants working in Farm to Fork labour markets.
Radboud University professor Tesseltje de Lange is Principle Investigator of the international HORIZON EUROPE project on Dignity for Irregularized Migrants (DignityFIRM). In the context of this project, Radboud University is offering position for a PhD Candidate devoted to improving the rights and working and living conditions of irregularized migrants working in Farm to Fork labour markets in Europe, Morocco and Ukraine. We particularly welcome candidates with an interdisciplinary research profile (preferably combining expertise on law and policy with social sciences) and proven experience with qualitative research methods. Strong organizational skills are also needed, as you will play an active role in the management of this timely international research project.
Your PhD research will be expected to contribute to the research objectives of DignityFIRM, which aims to contribute to improving the working and living conditions of irregularized migrants (IM) working in Farm to Fork (F2F) labour markets in four EU member states (Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Spain) and two associated countries (Morocco and Ukraine). You will analyse regulatory infrastructures that govern these conditions at the EU, national and local levels, and at the level of employers and the irregularized migrants themselves. The focus lies on irregularized migrants (e.g. undocumented or posted non-EU nationals, and EU nationals) at work in F2F labour markets, including platform labour, essential industries in securing EU livelihoods and with high systemic dependency on irregularized migrants with persistent group vulnerabilities. The project uses a mixed-method research approach, including a special focus on the division of labour in F2F markets with respect to gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and health and safety. Data collection will involve both desk research as well as empirical work, interviewing stakeholders individually and in focus groups. Based on your conceptual and empirical insights, and drawing on the data collected during the project, you will be expected to write and defend a PhD thesis at Radboud University.
The Radboud University Network on Migration Inclusion (RUNOMI) is leading the DignityFIRM project.You will spend one day a week as project management assistant and organize monthly DignityFIRM labs for the consortium, actively contribute to the management of project communication both internally with the fund provider and consortium, and externally with stakeholders and the general public. You will be given the opportunity to play an active role in the international research consortium of ten partners in European and non-European countries. Together, we are addressing the major global challenge of improving the rights of migrants and their working conditions in the food supply chain.

Requirements

• You hold a Master's degree in a relevant social scientific field (e.g. migration law, political science, geography, anthropology, sociology, or migration studies).
• You have proven knowledge of labour migration governance. Knowledge of EU legal and policy frameworks is considered to be an advantage.
• You have great motivation to work with an interdisciplinary research team (including law, geography and political science).
• You have proven experience with qualitative research techniques and fieldwork, and are willing to engage in substantial qualitative fieldwork.
• You have proven project management skills. You are meticulous in scheduling and time management and enjoy engaging proactively in a highly complex scientific project.
• Fluency in English is required; fluency in Dutch would be an advantage.
• You should have excellent communication skills to facilitate everyday operations of the international consortium.
• Knowledge of Ukraine or Morocco (and migration from these countries) will be considered an advantage.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: It concerns a temporary employment for 4 years.

• It concerns an employment for 1.0 FTE.
• The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €2,960 and a maximum of €4,670 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 10 ).
• You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
• It concerns a temporary employment for 4 years.

Your PhD research is positioned at the intersections of three Radboud University departments: the Centre for Migration Law (CMR), Criminal Law and Criminology , and Geography at the Nijmegen School of Management (NSM-RUNOMI). You will collaborate closely with your supervisors: Prof. Tesseltje de Lange (CMR, Principle Investigator of the DignityFIRM project), Prof. Masja van Meeteren (Criminology) and Dr Pascal Beckers (RUNOMI/Geography).
You will be based at CMR.
The Centre for Migration Law (CMR) is part of the Faculty of Law . Its research focus is on European and national migration law and is characterized by its international and interdisciplinary approach and a strong empirical component. The Centre conducts legal analyses as well as sociolegal research on the effects of migration law and policies.
Centre for State and Law
Your PhD research will be embedded in the public law-oriented Research Centre for State and Law (SteR), which is part of the Faculty of Law at Radboud University. CMR and Criminology participate in the SteR research programme. SteR research explores the developments in the field of public law and, in particular, the relation between law and state.
Graduate School of the Faculty of Law
As a PhD candidate, you will be part of the Faculty's Graduate School and participate in its activities. This includes following the core PhD training programme. RUNOMI was initiated in 2018 to strengthen university-wide, interdisciplinary collaboration in research and teaching and with societal actors. The network connects more than 100 member scientists from various RU faculties, who all have expertise on migrant inclusion issues.
