Job description

Doctoral education belongs to the core of VU Amsterdam. The goal of our doctoral education is to deliver engaged scientists equipped with top level research and transferable skills. Our doctorates are internationally oriented, multi and interdisciplinary, curiosity and results driven, creating an impact in science, society and economy. They start careers in and outside academia.

Over 2500 PhD candidates are working on their research career at VU, about half of them coming from abroad. PhD candidates are trained in doing research and while being trained they contribute enormously to the research output of VU. After graduation they constitute the new generation of teaching/research staff of universities but more and more they also start their careers elsewhere with similar impressive impact.

This job is about attracting and retaining the next generations of PhD candidates. Recruitment is done all over the world to find the most qualified people. VU values PhD candidates who show societal engagement and who bring additional diversity and excellence to our current PhD population.

The job is about continuing existing recruitment alleys and about looking for new opportunities. About using proven methods and tools and about designing new ones. The job is about working with our graduate schools, lots of individual professors, with our internationalization and HR people, and first and foremost with PhD candidates themselves.

Your duties

  • to manage the full recruitment journey of PhD candidates, closely cooperating with graduate schools, colleagues from International Office and HR
  • to design and execute strategies for marketing and recruitment activities per region
  • to monitor and improve the PhD candidate experience
  • to establish and maintain international recruitment related relations, such as Scholarship foundations and recruitment agents
  • to maintain and extend information and promotion channels, such as website, brochures, recruitment platforms, social media and fairs
  • to broadly advocate the cause and position of PhD candidates

Requirements
  • a university degree, at least MSc level
  • relevant experience in working with graduate schools, faculties or academics in research related roles
  • experience and knowledge of the PhD process, here and abroad
  • excellent skills in dealing with, and integrating multiple stakeholders and multiple priorities
  • excellent communication skills
  • a proactive attitude, a confident entrepreneur who pushes things forward
  • several years of experience in university marketing and recruitment

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €2.846 (scale 10)

and a maximum €4,474 (scale 10), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year.

International Office IO)
VU’s International Office drafts VU’s international strategy, manages and consults on international relations, advises board and faculties on matters of internationalization, and offers international services to students and staff.
VU’s IO is a centralized office in which all support for internationalization is concentrated. This includes international marketing, international student recruitment and admissions, housing and immigration support for students and staff, international student exchange, organization of VU’s Summerschool and Semester abroad program, international staff and PhD recruitment, International research and capacity building projects, international policy and business development. The office currently hosts 100 employees.
