Central PhD Council Representative (internal)

Are you interested in listening to PhD-candidates’ needs? Are you interested to learn about PhD-related policy? Do you want to get more involved in addressing PhD-related issues?  We are looking for a PhD representative of the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG) in the Central PhD Council (CPC) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA).


What are you going to do

For a period of two years, you will collaborate with PhD representatives from the other UvA faculties to represent the needs and wishes from PhDs at the UvA by providing (un)solicited advice to various bodies of the university.

You will/tasks:

As FMG representative in the Central PhD Council, you will:

  • collect information via the PhD representatives of all research institutes within FMG (AISSR, ASCoR, PSYRES, RICDE) on a wide variety of issues like contracts, work environment, education, information provision, and psychological and physical health;
  • attend monthly board meetings with all CPC members;
  • take part in various UvA-wide workshops and workgroups;
  • have regular meetings with the FMG Dean, as well as with the Rector Magnificus, to discuss PhD-related matters and to develop solutions for issues where possible.

What do we require

Your experience and profile:

  • you are an internal or external PhD candidate at the UvA, faculty of FmG;
  • your PhD contract is not expected to end within the coming two years;
  • you have experience with PhD-related policy or in a representative function (pre).

Our offer

You will gain deep insight into organisational structures of the UvA and you will help to address potential issues that exist within the PhD community. This experience is valuable for a future career at any university or in any other large organisation. You will get an extra month extension at the end of your PhD contract for every year you serve as a PhD representative (equal to approx. 3-4h a week). For external PhD candidates, other arrangements can be made.


About us

The Central PhD Council serves the interest of all PhD candidates at an administrative level and is a sounding board for organizational developments within the university concerning PhD candidates. Additionally, the Central PhD Council is a member of the PhD candidates Network of the Netherlands  (PNN), thereby also advocating the interests of PhD candidates at a national level.
