About the School of Arts and Social Sciences

The School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) at Monash University Malaysia was established in May 2008 and is one of the premier research and teaching schools of Arts and Social Sciences in Malaysia and Asia. It is part of Monash University’s Arts Faculty, the largest faculty of its kind in Australia. 

Academic staff within the School come from a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences such as Anthropology, Communication, Digital and Media Studies, Film and Television Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Geography, History, International Relations, International Political Economy, Literary Studies, Political Science, and Religious Studies. The School has built a reputation for research with a Southeast Asian focus on the three global challenges identified in Monash’s “Impact 2030” strategic plan: Climate Change; Geopolitical Security; and Thriving Communities. Accordingly, School research activity takes place within four Research Strengths:

The School invites applications for two programs of PhD scholarships, detailed below.

Graduate Research Excellence Scholarships (GRES)

We invite applications and proposals for GRES PhD projects in the disciplines represented within the School, with preference given to those that demonstrate an affinity with our Research Strengths.

The GRES program is open to all new graduate research students, Malaysian and international, enrolling at Monash Malaysia and current graduate research students in their first year of enrolment. 

Each GRES comes with a full tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend of MYR 2,800;  for PhD students, this covers three years and six months’ full-time equivalent commencement until the scholarship end date or upon thesis submission, whichever is earlier.

How to apply

  • Submit your application in the form of an Expression of Interest (EoI) for PhD candidature here .
  • Applications should include a research proposal and identify at least two potential supervisors.
  • If your application is successful, you will receive a further ‘Invitation to Apply’ for the GRES within a month, to which you must respond promptly. 

The deadline for GRES applications (EOIs) is 1 June 2023. 

 

Global Excellence Mobility Scholarships (GEMS)

The GEMS program is awarded to highly qualified students, Malaysian and international, seeking to work on specific projects of regional and global relevance that have been determined by existing supervisory teams from the Malaysian and Australian campuses. Recipients will be funded for an immersive year in Monash University (Australia), to facilitate access to Monash University’s global network of research expertise and infrastructure. 

GEMS are open to applicants for full-time candidature only.

Each GEMS comes with a full tuition-fee waiver for three years and three months, as well as the following stipend:

  • the period in Malaysia: a monthly stipend of MYR 2,800 for 30 months 
  • the period in Australia: a monthly stipend of MYR 7,000 for up to 12 months
  • a grant to cover travel and initial cost of living expenses in Australia

  • Applications should include: academic transcripts; curriculum vitae; personal statement on why you think you are suited for the GEMS program; and research proposals for one or both of the GEMS projects below
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview. 

The deadline for GEMS applications is 31 May 2023. 

School GEMS projects

The School invites applicants for two GEMS scholarships, one in each of the following projects:

  • Diverse Genders, Sexes and Sexualities in Southeast Asia. 
    • Supervised by Dr Joseph Goh (SASS) and Associate Professor Brady Robards (School of Social Science, Monash University Australia)
  • Feminism and Asian Screen Cultures 
    • Supervised by Dr Jonathan Driskell, Dr Agata Frymus (SASS) and Associate Professor Olivia Khoo (School of Media, Film and Journalism, Monash University Australia)

GEMS and GRES scholarship conditions

GEMS and GRES recipients are required to contribute a maximum of 10 hours per week in academic support and/or research support activities as determined by the School.
