As a key player in research and innovation in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), with its employees, is active in the domains of materials, the environment and IT. As an RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) and with its interdisciplinary impact-driven approach, LIST contributes to the development of Luxembourg’s economy and society. The Materials Research and Technology Department (MRT) translates cutting-edge materials research into applicable technology, with about 190 collaborators. For this, the department cultivates close relationships and joint projects with both academic and industrial partners, and contributes to Luxembourg's and Europe's innovation agenda in Materials Research and Technology.
The Advanced Instrumentation for Ion Nano-Analytics (AINA) group within the Scientific Instrumentation and Process Technology (SIPT) unit of MRT is renowned for developing innovative nano-analytical techniques for materials characterisation and life science applications. During the past few years we have been developing in particular a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) add-on system for the Helium Ion Microscope (HIM) and for a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), allowing the advantages of high spatial resolution with high sensitivity chemical information to be combined for nano-analytics.
New high performance materials research and development are creating new challenges for materials characterisation methodologies and tools. In particular, multiscale and on-line/in-line testing is expected to become more important in future, so that novel advanced instrument and metrology approaches will be required. In this project, we aim for the development of a new mass spectrometer, which fits not only the needs of on-line/in-line characterisation but also multiple other application axes including nano-analytics and space applications.
The PhD candidate will be in charge of the development of this new mass spectrometer. She/he will perform charged particle optics concept simulations, instrumental development and proof-of-concept testing of the new mass spectrometer using existing test benches and instruments in the AINA laboratory. The candidate will work with highly skilled scientists and engineers in the dynamic environments of the AINA group. The candidate will acquire highly valued skills in instrumentation development, in particular charged particle optics instrumentation and prototyping.
The candidate should have an excellent masters in physics, electrical engineering or closely related fields and have interest in working with prototype instrumentation development. The PhD candidate will be enrolled at the Doctoral School of Science and Engineering at the University of Luxembourg to fulfil academic requirements.
