The PhD candidate will be co-supervised by Dr. Marianne Noel (LISIS) and by Prof. Willem Halffman (Radboud University, ISIS). She/he will get a PhD degree from Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. He/she will carry out ethnographic research (mostly interviews), analysis of contents produced on platforms and social media in several countries. Travels paid by the project are planned. She/he will take part in training by the WTMC Graduate School as well as the IFRIS Graduate School. The tasks include also presentation of results at NanoBubbles internal meetings and workshops; writing of academic publications (some co-authored with other members of the team). Beyond the project, she/he will actively participate in the life of the LISIS, which regularly host international academic events and benefit from the lively academic context in the Paris region.
The Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences Innovations Sociétés (LISIS, UMR CNRS 9003) is seeking to appoint a PhD candidate to join a five-year European Research Council-funded project "NanoBubbles: how, when and why does science fail tocorrect itself?”.
The NanoBubbles ERC Synergy project's objective is to understand how, when and why science fails to correct itself. The project's focus is claims made within the field of nanobiology. Project members combine approaches from the natural sciences, computer sciences, and the social sciences and humanities (Science and Technology Studies) to understand how error correction in science works and what obstacles it faces. For this purpose, we aim to trace claims and corrections through various channels of scientific communication (journals, social media, platforms dedicated to error correction, conference programs, etc.) via both qualitative and digital methods.
The PhD candidate recruited will carry out research on error correction processes, the role of editors, journals and publishers in error correction, but also the role of the epistemic activists and their platforms in error correction.
