PhD position in molecular astrophysics - University of Trento, IT

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 08 Sep 2022

One Ph.D. position is available in astrochemistry/molecular astrophysics in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Trento, Italy (see https://molecular.physics.unitn.it/ ).

The position is funded for 3 years (starting from 1st November 2022) on a national project PRIN2020 – Astrochemistry beyond the Second Period Elements (see https://beyond2p.weebly.com/ ).

Description of the project: The number of molecules detected in space is increasing at a fast pace thanks to the improved sensitivities of telescopes. The presence of complex molecules in regions with extreme temperature and pressure conditions is a great challenge to the comprehension of chemical reactivity. By using an interdisciplinary approach (physics/chemistry/astronomical observations) the project aims at unveiling the formation routes of molecules containing atoms beyond the second period of the Periodic Table (e.g. S, P, Si and Cl). The research will focus on the reactivity of charged species with neutrals using guided ion beam mass spectrometry. Research will be carried out also in collaboration with other research groups at international facilities (SOLEIL synchrotron radiation in France and FELIX  Free Electron Laser laboratory in The Netherlands).

The successful candidate will join the Doctoral School of Physics. Interested candidates should contact IMMEDIATELY prof. Daniela Ascenzi ([email protected] ) for further information on the application procedure.
