PhD position at the University of Florence, Italy

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 25 Oct 2021

The title of the research project is: “Offshore wind energy: advanced computational models for the simulation of large floating turbines for the Mediterranean Sea”. It is a 3-year position starting on January 1st, 2022. The selected candidate will be enrolled in the International Doctorate in Civil and Environmental Engineering (https://www.indicee.unifi.it/ ). The call will close on October 25th, 2021. The selected candidate will spend 9 months in a foreign university (with a co-tutorship agreement) and 9 months in a company of the sector.

Brief description of the research: Very large floating wind turbines in deep water are complex systems which are exposed to the combined action of wind and waves. Especially during extreme sea states, nonlinear fluid-structure interaction phenomena need to be properly captured through numerical simulations based on more efficient and accurate discretization techniques than standard approaches. The research is focused on the nonlinear dynamics of platform and mooring lines and on their interaction with fully nonlinear waves. The main objective of the project is to develop numerical models based on innovative techniques, such as Isogeometric Analysis (IGA), in order to improve the trade-off between computational cost and accuracy in the prediction of the structural response.
