The PhD at Politecnico di Milano

Politecnico di Milano, home of over 45,000 students from around the world, is the first-ranked Italian technical university and among the first 20 Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities. The PhD course of the Department of Architecture. Built Environment and Construction Engineering (ABC-PhD ) is a unique program, training more than 130 international early-stage researchers who are supervised and assessed by a team of more than 150 faculty members. Research activity is carried out in strict connection with industrial and societal stakeholders.

Job description

The PhD candidate is expected to complete a doctoral education which includes training and research activities and the achievement of a doctoral degree. The candidate will be part of the Structural Performance Modelling, Management, and Monitoring research group led by Prof. Maria Pina Limongelli.

The primary objectives of this specific research project are as follows:

(1) TO Create advanced decision models that use SHM data to predict and assess the structural health of bridges, enabling proactive maintenance strategies.

(2) TO Investigate methods to integrate multi-modal data from various sensing technologies, e.g., sensors for structural health and environmental conditions; AND

(3) TO Establish a comprehensive risk assessment framework that considers both structural and non-structural factors to prioritize maintenance activities.

Required selection criteria

These criteria must be fulfilled for your application to be considered:

  • The candidate education must correspond to a five-year Italian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at Master's level.
  • Master’s degree, or equivalent education  in Civil Engineering with a final average grade higher than 80% of the max score (e.g. B or higher)
  • The candidate must meet the requirements for admission to the PoliMI doctoral program
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

Preferred selection criteria

The following criteria will be used to shortlist candidates for an interview:

  • Programming skills in for example MATLAB or Phyton
  • Experience in reliability analysis
  • Experience with Finite Element codes

Salary and conditions

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the Architecture, Built Environment, and Construction Engineering (ABC-PhD). Selection is carried out based on CV and on a technical interview by a committee nominated by the PhD management committee.

The period of employment is 3 years.

The ABC PhD course includes attending courses and undergoing periodical reviews every six months (Milestones) on behalf of dedicated Committees. Each Milestone focuses on specific content ranging from bibliographic research to drawing up the draft and final dissertation. The Milestones are supported by preparatory seminars that offer the PhD student the possibility of embarking upon a pathway to “learn to do research”.

Alongside the Milestones, the educational offer of the ABC PhD provides solid methodological training with a transdisciplinary approach fueled by the multi-faceted expertise presents within the department and the university, with a view to developing “soft/transversal skills” that constitute the founding elements of any career, in both academic and professional areas.
