7 Health Computing (7HC) srl, Italy, is offering an Early PhD Fellowship for 1 Early-Stage Researcher (ESR), in the framework of the PARENT project.

The selected candidate could choose to be enrolled in the Doctoral School of University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) or Cadiz (Spain).

The ESR will be hosted at 7HC premises in Rome, Italy.

The enrollment date will be between 01.07.2021 and 01.11.2021.

Applications are welcome from worldwide candidates wishing to pursue an industrial PhD research in the field of Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Biophysics applied to neurodevelopmental disease investigation, with interest in research areas related to neurological disorders, precision medicine, machine learning, bioinformatics, molecular and multiscale modelling.

The advertised position (ESR-14) is posted as part of the exciting PARENT project, PremAtuRe nEwborn motor and cogNitive impairmenTs: Early diagnosis (PARENT), funded by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme under Grant number 956394. The PARENT consortium comprises universities with researchers who are leading experts on motor and cognitive impairment diagnosis and treatment, medical diagnostics, clinical data digitalization, machine learning, mechanistic modelling, molecular and multiscale modelling, information and communication technologies.

The successful candidate will join an international network of 15 PhD Fellows (ESRs) to become part of the next generation of specialists able to challenge the traditional way of neurodevelopmental disease follow-ups. Indeed, the project is to implement the classical clinical evaluation process with multiscale and multiphysics modelling, artificial intelligence, hybrid neuroimaging technologies and automatized eye tracking for newborn. All of those technologies can be integrated in a last frontier of a modular intelligent decision support system built on cardinal principles such as Patient-Centred Design and Evidence-based and Personalized Medicine. Therefore, besides training ESRs on premature child related to neuro-diagnostic technologies, clinics, modelling, computer science and data management, PARENT emphasizes aspects related to ethics, privacy, and security which will be an integral part of the network's training program.

Description of Proposed Position: PARENT ESR-14

TOPIC: Software infrastructure and algorithms for premature newborn neurodevelopmental trajectory prediction from clinical data

Description: The PhD will be focused on integrative models to predict neurodevelopmental trajectory starting from early stage clinical/biochemical and real-world data.

Emphasis will be given to model design and implementation also considering ICT aspects such as data lake, software architecture, front-end developments of decision-tool platforms for precision medicine. Clinical data will be collected in dynamic databases controlled by classifiers with a machine learning nature following specific knowledge representation schemes.

Secondment Periods: The ESR14 project includes secondment periods to other beneficiaries and external partners of the PARENT Project (more information, will be given during the oral interview).

Job description:

The position is available for a 3-year period and ESR key tasks will be:

  • work independently, develop and carry through your research project
  • comply with the PhD training rule’s program of the chosen University
  • write scientific articles and your PhD thesis with support from your supervisors.
  • disseminate your research, participate in network related and international conferences and workshops
  • stay at partner research institutions for at least six months total to develop new skills
  • contribute to the everyday activities at the department.


7HC is an Innovative Startup funded at the end of 2019. It has been funded by a multidisciplinary group of highly qualified experts of several fields of science, such as medicine, bioengineering, physics, chemistry biology, informatics, coming from academy, industry, and medical services.

7HC Vision

7HC foresees future health-centered supporting decision tools mainly related to the three main clinical pillars: Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Therapy. Diagnosis is targeted by developing intelligent tools able to depict the health patient status as function of specific real world-features (e.g., clinical, environmental, biological data). Prognosis tools predict the evolution dynamics of the health condition as function of patient features and environment conditions (e.g., drug therapy, nutrition, comorbidities, etc..). Therapy is related to tools able to characterize the therapeutic support as a force influencing the evolution dynamics of the health condition.

Diagnosis Prognosis and therapy tools are thought to interact and work together in different manners in order to provide personalized solutions to a specific health issue.

7HC Solutions

7HC developed solutions are based on breakthrough and disruptive ideas and oriented toward translation from basic science to pragmatic applications. Moreover, developed solutions target clinical practice by means of innovative supporting decision tools

Related to the clinical practice, 7HC designs Explainable Machine Learning tools to predict pathological events (cardiovascular risk predictors for rheumatological patients, mortality risk prediction for COVID patients).

Related to Pharmaceutical research field 7HC designed automated tools for computational affinity and pharmacokinetics estimation for lead selection. Those supporting tools are designed to help and speed up the Drug Design/Discovery research by equipping pharma companies with virtual funnels to reduce the in vitro testing activity and thus reducing costs and human resources.

7HC is also developing solutions in the field of Precision Nutrition to explore/quantify/ relationships between food income and metabolic pathways.

7HC added value for PARENT ESR

7HC will train a young PhD student to develop a research project related to the PARENT research.

7HC shows also a broad multi-sectorial expertise sustained by deep knowledge and long experience of co-founders. On one hand 7HC brings knowledge and experience from the academic field concerning publishing activities as results of scientific research and student supervision (both master’s and PhD). On the other hand, 7HC is also characterized by knowledge and expertise concerning the industrial development of Information technology platforms and long experience in clinical activities in medical services (many years spent working in operating room and emergency room). Therefore, the enrolled ESR will benefit from being immersed into the multidisciplinary and multi-sectorial inner nature of 7HC.


The following 6 criteria must be fulfilled in order to allow the enrolment.

CRITERIA for EU ITN MSCA H2020 projects

  • The applicant MUST NOT have resided and not have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date — unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention(N1) .   • Eligible researcher must not have spent -more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of selection in the same appointing international organization.
  • The applicant must be an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) i.e. at the time of recruitment she/he must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent research experience) (N2) of her/his research career
  • The applicant must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.

  • Master’s Degree:
  • M.Sc. degree in Informatics, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, or other strictly related to the PARENT project: Master’s degree or equivalent

    Notice that master’s degree means the 2° level title, as defined by the Bologna Process, issued by an officially recognized academic institution, which grants admission in PhD programmes in the country of issuance.
