The call for applications of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographic and Anthropological Studies (XXXVII cycle), at the University of Padua and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice offers, among others, two PhD studentships for early stage researchers, enabling them to participate in the research team of the H2020 ERC 2018-Advanced Grant Project “WATER-CULTURES -The Water Cultures of Italy, 1500-1900 “-Grant Agreement– 833834 - P.I. Prof. David Gentilcore (curriculum “Historical Studies”).

Managed within Ca’ Foscari’s Department of Humanities, the five-year “Water Cultures” project proposes a new way of writing history, with water placed at the centre. The project is based around the synergistic interweaving of five research streams: the symbolic beliefs and practices associated with water; the circulation and evolution of knowledge related to water and the diseases associated with it; the management of the hydraulic systems and water resources of the big cities; the hydraulic landscape of rural areas; professions/occupations related to water and its use. Italy has been chosen as a "case study", for the richness of its archives and the social, political and geographical variety it offers, and a longue durée approach to better identify elements of continuity and change.

Each theme is assigned to a different member of the project team, which consists of 4 PhDs and 4 Post-doctoral research assistants (PDRAs), all of whom will be guided by Prof. Gentilcore .

The positions will be co-hosted at the University of Padua - Dipartimento di Scienze Storiche, Geografiche e dell'Antichità (DiSSGeA) in agreement with the Ca’ Foscari’s Department of Humanities (DSU).

Ca’ Foscari’s Department of Humanities (DSU) is a centre for the development of innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to history, literature, classics, archeology, art and anthropology. DSU has recently received the “Department of Excellence” Award by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research.

The joint Padua-Ca’ Foscari PhD Programme in Historical, Geographic and Anthropological Studies has been running since 2014, enrolling around 115 PhD students and producing until now around 40 successful PhDs. This PhD Programme promotes the development of original and innovative research, enhancing a transdisciplinary approach and offers unparalleled research resources and access to internationally reknowned experts in their field.

Studying History in Venice, among other things, allows you to benefit from strong interpersonal relationships with the professors.
