This PhD position is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network “NESTOR - Next generation high-speed optical networks for metro access”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme.
NESTOR studies the efficiency in connectivity as it is the major driver in the modern information society, where the range of data-driven applications is exploding, and new information-based value chains are rapidly emerging. Optical networks are the backbone of the global communication infrastructure, interconnecting billions of people and a huge number of various autonomous devices, control systems, and machines. The demand growth is especially pronounced in the access and metro links, where data rates largely exceeding the current <1 Tb/s will be required. Also, features such as the financial cost of the system elements, latency, dynamic reconfigurability, and energy consumption gain progressively more importance for the new generation of access and metro networks.
The objective pursued by NESTOR is the combination of the advanced coherent pluggable transceivers with newly developed artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) algorithms, to allow the optical network to be effectively optimized, e.g., to minimize the power consumption or to use the optical spectrum more efficiently. At the same time, the DSP telemetry may transform the metropolitan fiber infrastructure into a large, distributed sensor.
The NESTOR trained researchers will take advantage of the expertise of the top academic groups (Aston, PoliTO, UPC, SSSA, and TU/e) and core telecom industry (Infinera, BT, Orange, SM-Optics, VPI and Ericsson). NESTOR will provide Fellows with a uniquely broad education ranging from recent advances in ML&AI to real-world telecom engineering, which will enable them to design and implement high-capacity access and metro networks.
The main research topic of the offered PhD position will be on AI-based power saving and distributed sensing/failure prevention from optical telemetry. Telecommunications networks are a source for the environmental parameters on the geographical footprint and on the network status thanks to open control protocols and streaming telemetry. The optical fiber is an excellent sensor for mechanical stresses that are detected by physical properties of propagating light (WDM optical lightpath or dedicated lightsource). Moreover, several additional data
are available from telemetry (OTDR, power meters, thermometers, accelerometers, etc..). The Ph D student will exploit these properties by reaching the following objectives.
• Develop methods to extract performance monitoring data useful for this purpose
• Classification of detected phenomena (earthquake, traffic, working area, structure solidity, HW failure) using DNN techniques.
• Joint geographical localization together with the effect classification obtained by the DNN agent using a smart grid approach on multi-lightpath.
• Machine-learning methods to assist the optical control in minimizing power consumption
Moreover “secondments” are planned during the PhD studies.

Benefits
The candidate will benefit of a salary of approximately € 30,000 to € 50,000 per annum (depending on family status). She/he will conduct research in recognized international teams, will attend all the common training events of the Network (PhD schools, workshops, and convened sessions at international conferences) and will be in contact with the other doctoral candidates of the network. The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months. In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and “secondments”, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.
Eligibility criteria
All candidates must comply with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions eligibility requirements.
In particular candidates:
• must not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree;
• must carry out trans-national mobility and not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) within the host country for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to recruitment (short stays such as holidays are not taken into account).
To be eligible for a PhD at Politecnico di Torino, students are bound to have the following requirements:
1) A M.Sc. degree (i.e. 2nd level title, as defined by the Bologna Process), issued by an officially recognized academic institution, which grants admission in PhD programmes in the country of issuance.

Academic qualifications are accepted to take part in the selection process with the minimum average grade illustrated in Annex 3 of the Call for admission.
The original diplomas and transcripts should be available by 31st October at the latest (or before enrollment to PoliTO).
2) One of the following certificates of English language knowledge, regardless of the date of obtainment:
• IELTS with a minimum score of 5.5

Candidates will be assessed by a committee specifically appointed by Politecnico di Torino. They will be evaluated based on their resumes and on an interview, either in person or by telematic way.
