A PhD position is available in the laboratory of soil hydrology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Rehovot, Israel. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the hydrogeophysics group under the direction of Dr. Nimrod Schwartz. The group studies the interrelationships between soil physical, chemical and biological properties, and its impact on flow and transport in soil and root. We combine a variety of computational and experimental tools with a particular interest in geoelectrical methods to measure, monitor and map subsurface processes and properties. \\
Project: The spectral induced polarization (SIP) method is a geophysical technique increasingly applied to noninvasively characterize, monitor, and map porous media. Mechanistic models for the SIP signature of porous media consider diffusion and electromigration fluxes as the two sources for the transport of ions and polarization. Recently, results from our lab demonstrate that ion advection flux significantly alters the SIP signature of porous media\footnote{{Tsukanov, K., Assa, I., and Schwartz, N. (2021). Modeling and experimental study of the effect of pore water velocity on the spectral induced polarization signature in porous media. This project aims to enhance mechanistic understanding regarding the influence of advection flux on the SIP response of porous media. It will involve laboratory measurements and the development of a mathematical model that will describe the impact of fluid flow on the transport of ions at the particle surface and the resultant influence of the SIP signature. The interdisciplinary nature of the research will allow the successful applicant to develop a versatile set of skills in electrical measurements of porous media, numerical simulation of partial differential equations, flow, and transport at the solid-liquid interface, etc.
Funding: The project is funded by the Israeli Science Foundation for a total of 4 years. A full scholarship and tuition will be provided.
Requirements: Applicants must have completed a Master degree in physics, geosciences, environmental, mechanical, or chemical engineering, or a comparable subject. \\
Application procedure: Application is by CV and motivation letter, including two referees` contact details, to: [email protected]
