The Research Scholarship program is open to outstanding academics from foreign research institutions for particularly innovative research projects that contribute significantly to scientific progress through new perspective, questions, or findings in the subject areas of CriminologyPublic Law , or Criminal Law . Each department may award one Barbara Huber Scholarship per calendar year.

Barbara Huber (1935–2018) was an outstanding legal scholar and recognized specialist in English law and the broader common law legal system. She was a Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg, now Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law, where she carried out numerous large-scale comparative law projects.

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law (MPI-CSL) is a growing European center for research in criminology, public security matters, criminal law, and fundamental legal research. The Institute is part of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science – one of the world’s most distinguished research organizations. The high level of its fundamental research is reflected not least by the 31 Nobel Prizes awarded to Max Planck scientists since the Society was founded in 1948. The research conducted across our three departments (Criminology, Public Law, and Criminal Law) is comparative, international, and interdisciplinary.

The Institute, with its approximately 150 employees, is located in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), a dynamic university city with a 900-year history. The city in the trinational border region (Germany, Switzerland, and France) impresses newcomers with its high quality of life and international flair. Freiburg ranked third on Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2022” list of the top ten city destinations in the world.
