Offer Description

The Department of Physics seeks applicants for a PhD student position within the field of semiconductor device physics. The position is funded for three years by the Icelandic Research Fund.

Main tasks

Field of work

This Ph.D. project is focussed on the electrical properties of SiC/dielectric interfaces. This interface forms the insulating gate in SiC metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs). Today, power modules based on SiC MOSFETs are inside virtually all electric cars. During the 30 years of development physicists have played a vital role in this evolution first by inventing crystal growth processes for SiC and later advancing the necessary physical understanding of the SiO2 /SiC interface. However, despite the commercial success the SiC MOSFETs are still far from optimized and would enter new markets if the interface between SiC and the gate dielectric would be improved further. The Ph.D. work includes processing of SiC MOS devices in a semiconductor grade clean room. A substantial part of the work is detailed electrical characterization of the fabricated devices and comparison with devices obtained from international collaborators. The student will be expected to communicate results at international conferences and in scientific journals.

The research group

The supervisors will be Einar Sveinbjörnsson, Professor of Physics at the Faculty of Physical Sciences, and Dr. Arnar Már Viðarsson, post doctoral researcher at the Science Institute. The PhD work is made in close collaboration with several research groups abroad.
