Updated: about 1 year ago
Location: Hong Kong,
Deadline: 04 Oct 2019

The Environmental Geochemistry and Oceanography research group at the University of Hong Kong invites applications for a PhD-student position in paleoceanography, environmental oceanography or biogeochemistry.

The precise subject of the thesis will be decided upon agreement between the candidate and the supervisor and will depend on the candidate interests and strengths and the research interest of the group, which include paleoceanography, trace element in marine carbonates, nitrogen cycle (past and present) and marine pollution.

Suggested research topic (not exclusive):

  • Plastic and microplastic pollution
  • Use of compound-specific stable isotope in environmental science and paleoceanography
  • Blue Carbon storage in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia
  • Past change in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (Holocene, MIS 5e, MIS 11, etc)

We encourage applications from enthusiastic and self-motivated students who have demonstrated academic and research excellence in environmental or earth sciences, chemistry, or a related quantitative discipline. Applicants should have a 1st class honors degree or a 2.1 honors degree plus Masters (or equivalent). Experience in geochemistry, paleoceanography and/or mass spectrometry is considered an asset.

Successful applicants will be supported in their application to the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPF) and will have the chance to join the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, ranked 41st in the field of Earth and Marine Sciences by the 2019 QS World University Subject Ranking. Today, HKU is recognized internationally as a dynamic and comprehensive university of world-class standing. With its distinguished excellence in research and outstanding performance in teaching, it attracts first-class teaching and research staff and brilliant students from around the world.
