General information about Post-Graduate research programs at HKUST

To achieve its mission ‘to advance learning and knowledge through teaching and research, particularly at the postgraduate level’, HKUST offers Research Postgraduate Programs (RPgs) leading to Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The normative periods of RPgs programs are as follows:

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil) : 2 years
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): 3 years (with a relevant research master’s degree), 4 years (with a Bachelor’s degree only)

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees involve the completion of coursework in addition to the preparation of research theses. The MPhil thesis reports work on a significant topic; the PhD dissertation entails original research that contributes to a specific field and expands the frontiers of knowledge. HKUST provides generous scholarships for the best candidates to join its RPg community (MPhil or PhD programs). These (tax-free) scholarships can cover the tuition fee, accommodation fee and other living costs in Hong Kong. Eligible students can also apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which offers a higher stipend and aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's universities.
