Offer Description
One PhD position sponsored by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network EMPOWER-6G is offered at the Industrial Systems Institute (ISI) in Patras, Greece.
ISI is member of the ATHENA Research and Innovation Center and is a leading R&D institute of excellence conducting basic research and exploratory development on Information and communications technology for the Greek and European industry.
The Doctoral Candidate will join the recently launched EXACT-6G Doctoral Network which is funded by the Horizon Europe Research Program through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action, under the title: “Explainable Automation for Continuum 6G infrastructures”.
EXACT-6G research project aims to propose, design and validate a novel and agile 6G system architecture and enabling technologies, combining RIS with a Compute Continuum infrastructure and Distributed, Intelligent orchestration that seamlessly integrates Cloud, Edge and Far Edge nodes under a self-synthesized and self-managed PaaS system. Furthermore, EXACT-6G proposes new concepts, such as Pervasive Orchestration, and designs new Explainable AI models for for scalable, autonomous control of the infrastructure, and allows microservices to “follow” users, being tracked by Joint Communication and Sensing mechanisms. In this context, EXACT-6G will build a training network of 10 Doctoral Candidates who will conduct top-notch research towards the development and experimental evaluation of a gamut of techniques, methodological frameworks and tools.
The Doctoral Candidate hosted by ISI/ATHENA will develop an individual project on DRL driven Decision Engines for self-healing and self-managed microservices. His/Her work will adress (i) the generation of decisions that take the 6G system to the desired state fulfilling business intents in real time, and (ii) the offer of auto-redundancy, load-balancing and self-healing capabilities for the extended edge infrastructure. The expected results are: (i) a set of Decision Engines (DEs), one per compute continuum domain, that implement control loops towards decentralized zero-touch service management, (ii) Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning algorithms implemented within the DE control loop, and (iii) coordinated operations between the Distributed and Intelligent Management/Orchestration (DIMO) and the respective DEs to offer intent-to-policy translation and unification.
The Doctoral Candidate will be offered a three-year, full-time contract as well as enrollment to a PhD program in a nearby university. An up-to-six months secondment is foreseen at Iquadrat Informatica S.L. in Barcelona (Spain) as integral part of the contract.
In addition to developing his/her research project, the DC will:
- learn to master academic writing and author journal publications.
- present his/her work at projects workshops, plenary meetings and international conferences.
- participate in secondments to consortium partners.
- contribute to the supervision of undergraduate students.
Candidates should send their applications by March 31st through https://www.exact6g.eu/oaf-2024 . Incorporations will start as of April 2023.
