The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). It also maintains a research station with further locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

ZALF contributes several subprojects to the collaborative project "BonaRes" (Soil as a Sustainable Resource for the Bioeconomy, www.bonares.de), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Within this context, a repository for data from Long-Term Field Experiment (LTE) has been established as part of the larger BonaRes Repository for landscape and soil research data. It includes a georeferenced web application with comprehensive LTE meta-data information, GIS and modelling activities using the spatial/temporal and LTE data at different scales.

We are offering a part-time position (up to 60 hour/month) limited until 31.12.2022, starting as soon as possible at our location in Müncheberg as

Student Assisstant (m/f/d)

to assist in facilitating the BonaRes Project

Your tasks:

  • Acquisition and pre-processing of spatial (e.g., remote sensing, EO) and temporal (i.e. climate) data
  • Assisting modelling activities on soil-carbon dynamics, climate change impact and scenario analyses
  • Searching and reviewing peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • Supporting scientific publications of the group in peer-reviewed journals

Your qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in environmental science, geography, or related subjects
  • Experience in GIS analysis and software (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Long-Term Field Experiments
  • Knowledge of environmental modelling (soil-water, biogeochemical) is relevant
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, proficiency in German is beneficial.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Flexibility and willingness to grasp new interdisciplinary topics
