The Chair of Geoinformatics is looking for a researcher / PhD candidate (M.Sc. in Geodesy, Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or similar) in the field of Digital Twins of the Built World

The Chair of Geoinformatics at TUM has a vacancy for the following position (to be filled as soon as possible):

Researcher / PhD Candidate (f/m/d) 100%, Multi representation Digital Twins of the Built World

Your tasks
The Chair of Geoinformatics is conducting a research project together with five other groups at Technical University of Munich from the fields of photogrammetry, computer vision, remote sensing, architectural informatics and Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the Georg Nemetschek Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Built World. The goal of this collaborative research is to automate the creation and updating of multiscale digital models of the built environment using AI methods. A digital twin of the built world will not only consist of a single type of representation, but has to consider multiple representations at the same time. The same building, bridge, or road may, for example, be represented by an object in a semantic 3D City Model, as a 3D point cloud, a 3D mesh model or a BIM dataset. In your research, you will contribute to the development of a formal and computable framework that can automatically compare and link urban models over the broad range of representations. Your work will aim at the development of similarity measures for 3D models of the built environment considering the many differing modelling aspects including geometry, topology, semantics, appearance, scale, and time. In addition to your research work, participation in teaching at the Chair of Geoinformatics and in the supervision of student projects is possible.

Your Profile
- M.Sc. in Geodesy, Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or similar
- Interest in the topics Semantic 3D City Models, Building Information Modelling, Digital Urban Twins

- Good programming skills (e.g. in Java, C++) and knowledge of modelling languages such as UML and OWL
- Experience in automated 3D object reconstruction is desirable
- Very good knowledge of the German or English language (written and spoken)

Our Offer
The Chair of Geoinformatics is internationally renowned for its work in the field of semantic 3D city and landscape models, its contributions to international standardization, namely CityGML, and its work in the field of data management for smart cities and regions. We offer a stimulating working environment at TUM, integrated in our international team of highly motivated researchers at the Chair of Geoinformatics and in the Georg Nemetschek Institute. We are offering initially a 2-year contract with the possibility of extension as well as the possibility to do a doctorate. We offer a competitive salary and benefits depending on professional experience and seniority in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the State of Bavaria (TV-L E13). TUM explicitly encourages applications from women and all others who bring additional diversity dimensions to the university's research and teaching strategies. Preference is given to applicants with disabilities and essentially the same qualifications.

Application
We look forward to receiving your convincing application with a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae and academic certificates in a single PDF file by e-mail to [email protected] with the subject “Researcher Digital Twins of the Built World” for the attention of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Thomas H. Kolbe by July 31, 2021 at the latest.
