The institute of Fluid Dynamics is conducting basic and applied research in the fields of thermo-fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics in order to improve the sustainability, the energy efficiency and the safety of industrial processes.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Experimental Thermal Fluid Dynamics invites applications as Researcher (f/m/d) or PhD student (f/m/d) Edge computed fluid flow tracking in biogas digesters.

The advertised position is suitable either for PhD students (f/m/d) limited for three years with 29,25 h/week or resarchers (f/m/d) limited until 30 June 2025 with 39 h/week. The position will be available from 1 November 2022.


Your tasks:

# Implementation of supervised machine learning for efficient image processing on edge computing hardware:

# Design and implementation of a hardware setup for flow tracking experiments in a stirred vessel
# Comparison of the performance of different image processing methodologies
# Evaluation of mixing in a stirred vessel based on camera data
# Configuration of a hardware setup for operation at a biogas digester
# Clustering of data from a biogas plant control unit and external weather stations
# Generation of control signals for optimal mixing in the biogas digester
# Communication of results with industrial partners and through scientific channels
# Supervision of students (f/m/d)
# Publication of results in scientific journals


Your profile:

# Master or Diploma degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or a related field
# Competence in two or more of the following fields is required:

# Methods of big data, machine learning and artifical intelligence (pytorch, tensorflow)
# Excellent programming skills (python) and strong mathematics background
# Processing and feature extraction from image sequences
# Implementation and programming of edge computing hardware
# Experimental fluid dynamics, preferably experience with Non-Newtonian fluids
# Rheology/mixing in biogas digestors, fermentation processes or wastewater treatment

# Excellent English and good German language skills
