Postdoc Position in Cytogenetics (f/m/d)

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Germany,
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 16 Jan 2022

The research group “Experimental Taxonomy ” seeks to define inter-species relationships, track the evolution of traits and understand the influence of geological and ecological factors over species stability and speciation. The research group Chromosome structure and function is interested in the process of chromosome segregation.

To support our teams, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate in an interdisciplinary project to analyze karyotype evolution. Karyotype evolution within the genus Crocus (Iridaceae) is shaped by dysploidy chromosome number changes. In extreme cases, the basic chromosome number was reduced from n = 15 to n = 4 within a few million years while doubling genome size at the same time. We aim to unravel the complex chromosome evolution of crocuses, to obtain insights in the role of dysploidy in plant evolution in the framework of a DFG project.

Your tasks:

  • Development and application of crocuses chromosomal landmark markers within three selected species groups (18 taxa) using satellite DNAs, LTRs as well as large low-copy number genes to develop probes for fluorescence in situ hypidization (FISH) from whole genome shotgun data.

You fit to us:

  • … if you are interested in biological questions that are relevant for science and society.
  • … if you are open-minded, active, and strongly motivated.
  • … if you see your future in academic research.
  • … if you like to work in a multidisciplinary and dynamic team.

Your qualifications and skills:

  • You hold a PhD degree in biology or related fields.
  • You have experience in cytogenetics (chromosome preparation, FISH, probe development, RepeatExplorer analysis).
  • Solid English skills are a prerequisite for effective work in our multicultural environment.

We offer you:

  • … an interdisciplinary research environment at the intersection of cytogenetics, phylogenetics and bioinformatics.
  • … a collegial working atmosphere.
  • … a project-based position limited for 36 months – starting by 1 April 2022.
  • … a gross salary up to 100 % E13 TV-L.
