As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.
The Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research conducts materials research for future applications, e. g., in information technology and for energy conversion.
As part of the Institute, the Department of Semiconductor Materials invites applications as PhD (w/m/d) Spin-momentum relaxation dynamics of Dirac fermions in topological insulators in cooperation with the Department of Spectroscopy.
The position will be available from 1 November 2021. The employment contract is limited to three years.
Tasks:
The objective is to experimentally establish a basic understanding of the dynamics of Dirac carriers in topological insulator materials, combining the benefits of time-domain terahertz (THz) polarimetry and optical pump - THz probe spectroscopy.
- Planning and execution of time-resolved pump-probe experiments in the THz frequency region
- Analysis and modelling of the experimental data
- Carrying out literature research
- Publication and presentation of scientific results
Requirements:
- Master's degree in Physics or Material science
- Solid understanding of quantum mechanics
- Knowledge of semiconductor physics, ideally including narrowband gap semiconductors and semimetals
- Experience with optical techniques, ideally including ultrafast and/or THz spectroscopy
- Independent working style, demanding high quality of your own work
We offer:
- A vibrant research community in an open, diverse and international work environment
- Scientific excellence and extensive professional networking opportunities
- The employment contract is limited to three years
- Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement TVöD-Bund
