PhD: Thermomagnetic harvesting of low grade waste heat

Updated: 2 months ago
Location: Dresden, SACHSEN

Description of the offer :

With cutting-edge research in the fields of ENERGY, HEALTH and MATERIALS, around 1,500 employees from more than 70 nations at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) are committed to mastering the great challenges facing society today. The Institute for Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research is dedicated to the study of materials and their nanostructures that can be considered for future applications in information technology and are based on electrical, magnetic or optical functionalities. The Department of Group Ferroic materials, films and devices is looking for a PhD Student (f/m/d) PhD candidate for thermomagnetic harvesting of low grade waste heat. HEAT4ENERGY is a 4-years EU-Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network project. The main goal of HEAT4ENERGY is to train a new generation of enablers for the European Energy Transition with the skills needed to assess the potential of new energy technologies. They will acquire these in practice by addressing the challenge of making the first realistic and energy efficient thermomagnetic energy converters for low grade waste heat (<100°C) to electricity and they will learn how to upscale these and bring them to a viable market level. The project offers training for science and technology for energy transition and climate action, as well as transferable and complementary skills and Open Science related training. Through secondments, the HEAT4ENERGY PhD students will engage in all fields of materials development for energy, ranging from physics to industrial praxis. Your tasks: -This research is part of an EU-Horizon Europe international project aiming at the development of thermomagnetic generators for efficient conversion of waste heat into energy. -Work interdisciplinary at the interface of engineering, physics and materials science. The thesis is embeded in a team working on ferroic materials, films and devices. -Design, construct and test novel thermomagnetic generators with improved efficency and power density. -Three secondments at academic and industrial project partners. Your profile: -Completed university studies (Master/Diploma) in the field of Engineering, Physics, Material Science or related field -Knowledge in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering, thermodynamics, magnetism and functional materials are beneficial -Experience in CAD, FEM simulation and Labview are helpful -MSCA requires candidates have not spent more than 12 month working or studying in Germany within the last 36 months prior to the job appointment -Not already hold a PhD -This PhD requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis Our offer: -A vibrant research community in an open, diverse and international work environment -Scientific excellence and extensive professional networking opportunities -A structured PhD program with a comprehensive range of continuing education and networking opportunities - more information about the PhD program at the HZDR can be found here - Depending on your family status and health insurance etc. your monthly gross salary will be between €3000 and €3500. During the calculation of the net income a deduction of compulsory social contributions, the choice of health insurance, as well as direct taxes (e.g. income tax) need to be considered -30 days of paid holiday leave -We support a good work-life balance with the possibility of part-time employment, mobile working and flexible working hours -Numerous company health management offerings -Employee discounts with well-known providers via the platform Corporate Benefits - An employer subsidy for the "Deutschland-Ticket Jobticket" The selection decision will be made by a Selection Committee of the project partners. By submitting your application, you agree to your data being shared with the project partners. We look forward to receiving your application documents (including cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, etc.), which you can submit via our online-application-system: https://www.hzdr.de/db/Cms?pNid=490&pOid=71138&pContLang=en
