We have multiple open vacancies for PhD students and Postdocs in communication and information theory and the application of machine learning in reliable communications at the Communications Engineering Lab (CEL, Prof. Laurent Schmalen) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany.

Topics of the positions are centered around the realization of energy-efficient communication systems and future 6G communications. Topics include, but are not limited to

  • Machine learning for energy efficient communication system, with a focus on both the physical and media access control layer
  • Information theory for energy efficient and complexity-constrained communication systems
  • Novel flexible channel coding schemes for short block and medium block lengths
  • Information theory and novel waveforms for joint communications and sensing 
  • Semantic communications in the context of 6G

The tasks of the position include carrying out independently research in one of the fields above, This includes the mathematical analysis of new data transmission schemes as well as the software implementation of simulation and evaluation tools. Besides this, you are responsible for the publication of selected research results in scientific journals and conferences. Other tasks include the support of teaching activities at the Communications Engineering Lab (CEL). The job is associated with the goal of graduating with a Dr.-Ing. (German quivalent of a PhD) degree.

Personal qualifications

You are in possession of a very good M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and information technology, communications engineering, or applied mathematics. You have additionally profound knowledge in communication and information theory and signal processing, are fluent in spoken and written English (knowledge of German is considered a plus, but not necessary), and you are able to work independently and responsibly. Ideally, you have experience in programming and further knowledge in machine learning. You have confident manners and are professional in dealing with project partners, students. You are a team player and you are equipped with organizational talent. Ideally, you have experience in one of the following programming/development environments: Python/MATLAB/PyTorch/Tensorflow/C++.

At the CEL, you can expect an interdisciplinary research environment at the interface betwen electrical engineering, information technology, computer science and physics, offering you large scientific freedom. We offer a fully funded, full-time temporary employment with a competitive salary at pay grade TVL-E13, depending on the fulfillment of professional and personal requirements. The typical duration to get a PhD at KIT is 3 to 5 years.
