PhD Student position (m/f/d)

Updated: about 8 hours ago

The Leibniz-Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the area of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for urgent societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health etc.) by modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the full spectrum from basic over applied research up to pre-industrial development and is performed in collaboration with national and international partners from university, academy and industry. The institute is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin (https://www.fv-berlin.de/ ) and a member of the Leibniz Association www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de .

We are offering a

PhD Student position (m/f/d)

for the topic: “In-situ calorimetry in the transmission electron microscope”

The Leibniz Institut für Kristallzüchtung recently has a strong focused activity on in-situ transmission electron microscopy to study phase formation and phase transition in group III sesquioxides. Group III sesquixodes recently gained interest for applications in power electronics and as photodetectors. The variety of possible phases permit a novel degree in tuning controlling physical and functional properties for novel device applications. The goal of the present project is to develop in-situ calorimetry in the transmission electron microscope to gain quantitative insights into the mechanisms of phase formation and phase transition at the atomic scale by in-situ transmission electron microscopy. IKZ has excellent expertise and facilities in this field; among them, an aberration corrected TEM/STEM with fast camera and in-situ holders for heating and biasing. The task of the PhD includes the TEM studies, image simulations and modeling. Collecting and evaluating in-situ data is of particular importance here.

The PhD project is performed in the framework of the Leibniz Science Campus GraFox “Growth and fundamentals of oxides for electronic applications”, which seizes to fuse the excellent individual activities and competences in Berlin on one of the most prospective material systems for future electronic and (renewable) energy applications. Through collaborative research and publications we aim to establish an internationally renowned key region in Berlin. Details can be found on http://grafox.pdi-berlin.de/ . The project will benefit from IKZs participation in FAIRmat, a consortium that aims at establishing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary data infrastructure in materials science (https://www.fair-di.eu/fairmat/consortium ).

Requirements:

  • Applicants must hold a master degree either in physics, chemistry, materials science or related fields with relevant experience
  • Skills in these fields are highly welcome: solid state physics, materials science, transmission electron microscopy, image simulation, programming and experience in focus ion beam preparation
  • You enjoy working in a motivated team
  • Good English language skills written and oral

What we offer:

The position is limited to three years, an extension for another year is possible. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (75%) (Treaty for German public service). The IKZ is an equal opportunity employer and actively supports reconciliation of work and family life. There is equality for applicants of all genders. Qualified women are especially encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to disabled candidates.
