PhD student in the project Transregio CRC-181 "Energy Transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean”

The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) is member of the Leibniz Association with research focus on the middle atmosphere. It closely cooperates with the University of Rostock and is part of their teaching program. The IAP is funded in equal parts from federal and state sources, has an annual budget of about 8,5 Mio Euro and employs about 90 people.

The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) offers a 3-year position as

PhD student (m/f/d)

starting as soon as possible in the Optical Soundings Department. The salary is according to class EG 13 TV-L, Tarifgebiet Ost (66 %). Only candidates can be considered who fulfill the requirements for temporal contracts according to § 2 WissZeitVG.

Tasks: Within the framework of the GRF research project CRC-181 "Energy Transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean", the properties of gravity waves will be analyzed with different methods in order to compare and validate newly developed parameterizations. For this purpose, measurements with current Doppler lidar systems will be prepared, performed and evaluated. Further, numerical simulations in the global model KMCM with the turbulence parameterization gDSM developed at the IAP will be continued and compared with lidar and radar measurements. The aim is to to use these results to validate the MS-GWaM and IDEMIX-a gravity wave parameterizations developed in other subprojects of the TRR.

The work will include:

  • realization of lidar measurements
  • analysis of gravity waves from lidar temperature and wind measurements
  • realization of suitable simulations in KMCM
  • comparison with other data sets (measurements by radar, gravity wave parameterization etc.)
  • development and evaluation of physical concepts to understand the results

Requirements:

  • Very good university degree (diploma/master) in physics, meteorology or a related field
  • Interest in theoretical meteorology and its geophysical issues
  • Good knowledge of scientific programming and data analysis (FORTRAN, C++, Python, etc.) and interest in working with parallel computers
  • Great interest in science, a high degree of self-organization and willingness to perform
  • Willingness to perform lidar measurements during the night or on weekends
