PhD Student position (m/f/d)

Updated: about 3 hours ago

The Leibniz-Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the area of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for urgent societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health etc.). by modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the full spectrum from basic over applied research up to pre-industrial development and is performed in collaboration with national and international partners from university, academy and industry. The institute is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin (https://www.fv-berlin.de/ ) and a member of the Leibniz Association www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de .

We are offering a

PhD Student position (m/f/d)

In-situ studies of plastic relaxation in InGaN buffers serving as substrates

Extending the application range of (In,Ga)N LEDs to the red part of the optical spectrum is of high interest for full color displays. The realization of efficient emitters in this spectral range requires the development of relaxed InGaN template structures with low dislocation densities serving as substrates. Within a joint project between IKZ and the Institute of High-Pressure Physics of the Polish Academy of Science, it is our aim to realize such optimized InGaN templates based on a quantitative understanding of the plastic relaxation dynamics in these layers. The proposed PhD thesis will focus on the analysis of the structural properties InGaN templates by TEM, XRD and cathodoluminescence. To gather deeper insights into the plastic relaxation dynamics, we additionally aim to perform in-situ XRD and TEM experiments. Finally, the QWs grown on such templates will be examined with respect to their quantum efficiency. All structural characterization will be done at the IKZ, while the epitaxial growth will be conducted at our partner institute in Warsaw.

Qualifications

  • MSc or equivalent degree in physics or materials science
  • Experience in transmission electron microscopy and/or x-ray diffraction
  • Programming skills are of advantage (e.g. Python, C#)
  • Profound English language skills

What we offer

The position is limited to 3 years with an option for extension for an additional year. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (75 %) (Treaty for German public service).
