The Paul-Drude-Institut für Festkörperelektronik (PDI) performs basic research as a lively symbiosis of materials science and solid state physics. Our research aims at inspiring and demonstrating new functionalities for future information technologies. As a member of the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft and Forschungsverbund Berlin we are an independent research institute with about 100 employees and collaborate with all three universities in Berlin. You may find more details at www.pdi-berlin.de .
PhD position (m/f/d): Cryogenic Scanning Tunneling Microscopy of 2D Semiconductors
The PDI has longstanding expertise in cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with special focus on atom manipulation and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) on semiconductor surfaces. A PhD student position is available in the STM group of the PDI. The successful candidate will participate in a research project dedicated to the investigation of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide layers grown by chemical vapor deposition, with emphasis on the STS characterization and manipulation of atomic point defects. The work is carried out with a highly stable STM apparatus operated at 4 K, providing detailed information on electronic structure and elementary excitations at the atomic length scale. The project is embedded in an international collaboration and offers a scientifically stimulating working environment.
You should have a master degree in physics and preferentially a background in solid state physics, ideally with experimental hands-on experience in surface science techniques including scanning tunneling microscopy. Experimental skills and a solid physical understanding are essential to perform the work. We are looking for a new colleague who enjoys working in a highly motivated team of researchers and technicians.
This position is temporary. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (Treaty for German public service). PDI is pursuing a gender equality policy. Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to disabled candidates.
Please submit your application in pdf format via email by March 20, 2022 with the reference PhD-STM to [email protected] , including a dedicated cover letter, CV, publication list, letter(s) of recommendation, diploma(s), and transcript(s).
