PhD Student Position (m/f/d) Acoustophotoelectric Effect in 2D-vdW-semiconductors for efficient photodetection

Updated: 27 days ago

The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the area of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for urgent societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health etc.) by modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the full spectrum from basic over applied research up to pre-industrial development and is performed in collaboration with national and international partners from university, academy and industry. The institute is part of Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (https://www.fv-berlin.de/ ) and a member of the Leibniz Association www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de . You can find more details on the institute webpage: https://www.ikz-berlin.de .

We are offering a

PhD Student Position (m/f/d)

for the topic: “Acoustophotoelectric Effect in 2D-vdW-semiconductors for efficient photodetection”

Dynamic strain engineering in 2D-van der Waals (vdW) materials opens new perspectives in materials design. The goal of this project is to investigate the photoelectric response of 2D-vdW-semiconductors under the influence of surface acoustic waves (SAW).

The planned works will be carried out mostly in Prof. R. Blick’s group, CHyN, Universität Hamburg, and partially at the Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ, Berlin). At IKZ, we produce piezo-electric oxide perovskite films, 2D-vdW-semiconductors and have established layer transfer processing. In cooperation with IKZ-scientists, these materials should be optimized to increase the coupling efficiency between SAW and 2D-materials. At University Hamburg, the tasks of the PhD student will include sample fabrication via layer transfer and lithographic processes, measurements of the photoelectric effect under the influence of SAW and THz radiation, and interpretation and modelling of experimental data.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants should be highly motivated to explore and develop a novel material platform
  • Applicants must hold a master degree either in physics, chemistry, materials science or related fields with relevant experience and must have an experimental background
  • Skills in these fields are welcome: materials science, high frequency equipment, piezo-/ferroelectricity, data analysis (e.g. Origin, Matlab, Python, Autocad)
  • Good English language skills written and oral

What we offer

The position is at first limited to three years, an extension for another year is possible. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (Collective agreement for the public sector) including the usual social benefits (30 vacation days in a 5-day week, flexible working hours). The IKZ is an equal opportunity employer and actively supports reconciliation of work and family life. There is equality for applicants of all genders. Qualified women are especially encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to disabled candidates.
